Short answer
Gökkaya Hafriyat carries out excavation, earthworks and backfill for construction and utility projects in Famagusta (Gazimağusa) and İskele, North Cyprus. Excavation lowers the ground to the level a structure or utility requires. Backfill refills excavated or low areas with suitable material, layer by layer.
What does excavation and backfill cover?
The scope depends on the project. Common jobs include:
- Foundation excavation for buildings, houses and pools
- Lowering plot levels and preparing the ground
- Trench excavation for utility lines
- Backfilling around foundations and in trenches
- Controlled fill to raise an area
What should be checked before digging?
- Plot boundaries and the excavation levels in the project
- The position of electricity, telephone, water and sewer lines crossing the site
- Safe access for trucks and the excavator
- Distance to neighbouring structures and the road
- Whether excavated material will be reused as fill or removed from the site
Why does excavation safety matter?
Collapse is the main risk in deep excavations. According to the US safety agency OSHA, trenches 1.5 metres (5 feet) deep or more need a protective system unless they are entirely in stable rock. Excavated material should also stay at least 0.6 metres (2 feet) from the trench edge.
These figures are an international reference. Local rules and the engineer’s decisions apply to your project.
How should backfill be placed?
If a thick layer is placed in one go, the lower part stays loose and can settle over time. Fill is therefore spread in layers of the thickness given in the project, and each layer is compacted with a plate compactor or roller.

Frequently asked questions
- How is the price of excavation worked out?
- It depends on the excavation volume, ground conditions, site access, the machine required and whether excavated material must be taken away. A quote is prepared from the job details rather than a fixed price.
- Can excavated soil be reused as fill?
- Yes, if the material is suitable. Organic or very clayey material is generally not considered suitable for structural fill. The project specification and ground conditions decide.
- Can I call about a small excavation job?
- Yes. Share the location and size by phone and we can review whether it fits based on the details.
